But for a main computer/as an ultra light laptop, there are much better options at only slightly higher price points. Having bought other "Cheaper" SD memory chips, I have learned first hand how slow a digital camera's response when taking Hi Res photos using standard or less expensive chips. I am typing this review on it and the non-"chiclet" keyboard feels big and spacious. Very easy to type on. I actually thought I'd miss the chiclet keyboard quite a bit, but nope. Not at all. All the keys seem to have great travel and feel sturdy, including F9 (which someone else mentioned. The "carbon fiber" treatment on the exterior shell is nice but not as readily visible as the photos on Amazon would have you to believe. It is actually quite a bit more subtle in real world lighting. It is nice though. This unit is slick. The carbon fiber look is also there on the palm rest, though not on the bottom. Screen is bright and crisp. I installed Hulu desktop and found that full screen video is choppy unless on the lowest quality setting. This might just be a result of the resources that the Hulu Desktop app is using since it requires 2GB RAM and I only have 1GB in my unit.</span><br /><br /><br /></div><span class="availability"><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="availability">The hard drive comes pre-partioned into 2 local drives, C and D. C being 100GB and D being 122GB. Not a fan of this setup, but will go with it for now. I figured the Hard Drive would be partitioned since one of the advertised features is that by holding F9 during boot up you can reimage back to factory default. The unit came sort of no frills with only the battery, install CD, adapter, and warranty card in the box. Installing many programs on it under windows 7 starter has been a breeze so far.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">One major gripe about the unit is that since it has such a heavy 6 cell battery that is all the way to the rear of the unit, I found the computer wanting to tilt backwards, its front feet lifting off my lap quite often, especially if the screen is pushed further away from you. This wasn't too big a deal if you have it on an absolutely flat surface, but I can see how if you are lap typing on this puppy that it would be an issue. The netbook is seriously weighted towards the rear hinge forcing you to cheat the screen angle forward in order to compensate. This gives you a slightly less viewable angle. Prior to purchasing the 1001p, I had taken a look at the HP Mini 210 and decided against it primarily because its 6 cell battery extends out and down from the rear hinge area. But now I see why their engineers chose this route, it forces the laptop back into a typeable position. I almost wouldn't mind that sort of a design now.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">First full day of usage I got around 7 off/on hours of battery life with about 20% remaining. Not sure if I'll get close to the "asterix-promised" 11 hours of battery life as my battery meter seems to tell me it will be closer to 7-8 hours. I found that if you hit Fn + Spacebar, you can shuttle through the various Asus powersaving modes (S.H.E. - Google it). Only time will tell how much they add to system performance and battery life. Overall I'm pleased with the unit. My biggest gripes are the rear-weighted design and the pre-partitioned hard drive. Other than that, I think it's a fine machine. I found the trackpad to be zippy and quite responsive. I have yet to have any cursor-jumping issues. What happened to me is important for potential buyers of the current item, as well. Bear with me, as any potential purchaser should be aware of what may happen should there be any defect in the ASUS item they receive.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">At the beginning of my review, let me recommend the review by "Turtle James," which is currently the top review for ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life). He includes much helpful information about the setup of this netbook, and I find his information to be quite flawless, though I'm not sure it is necessary to combine the partitions of the hard drive. The computer itself seemed to run well, and was not nearly as slow as some people make it out to be, but it is with regret that I must tell the tale of the defective charger, which turned the computer into an expensive paperweight.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">I followed the instructions in the manual (which matches Turtle James's review well) regarding the charging of the netbook, and I think I would have discovered a quite long battery life as a result, if I would have kept it long enough to evaluate that part. However, I encountered a problem with a small defect that made the netbook unusable.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">The charger, the AC adapter that plugs into the power outlet was unusual from the beginning. After the first charge, I noticed that the blue light that lights up on the charger would stay lit for a while after unplugging from any power source. Not having any experience with this particular adapter before, I was not sure if that was normal, and in fact am still not sure.</span><br /><br /><span class="availability">After going through two cycles of charging and depleting the battery, as instructed, I attempted to charge the netbook for the third time, and behold, the charger did not work at all. When this happens, one cannot charge the netbook, and therefore cannot use it until one obtains a new charger. Buying a new charger after only two charges is in my opinion ridiculous, and to be avoided on principle.</span><br /></div><span class="availability"><br />So, I set about to rectify the situation, first calling the manufacturer, ASUS (pronounced ay-soos' by the service personnel). After messing about for some time trying different things with the technician, it became apparent that the charger must be defective. They said I could begin the process for an RMA, if I like, and I did like that idea, until I got further into the details.<br /><br />It came as a surprise to me that ASUS would require me to send the defective part back to them first, upon receipt of which, they would begin the process to send me a new part that functioned correctly. I was informed that the RMA process at that point would take 10 - 14 business days. I asked what shipping method would be used to send the new part to me, and was informed it would be Fed-Ex...Ground.<br /><br />The entire process, therefore, would take about a month to get what was rightfully mine in the first place for having purchased the device, after which I would not be able to return the device.<br /><br />So, I chose to return the device to Amazon instead, because I learned the valuable lesson of what it is like to deal with the ASUS service department. I cannot thank ASUS enough for clarifying to me what type of company I was dealing with when purchasing their magnificent piece of . . . gadgetry.<br /><br />I also made the mistake of ordering RAM and a case for the netbook at the same time, accessories I had no further need of, so I returned those as well. Amazon, being a company with integrity, refunded the entire amount. Yes, you are correct, in the early stages of computing, computers were only able to utter a beep. This sound was used as a warning to the user that something might be amiss. Later on, technicians were able to toy with the length and frequency of the beep, thus creating a bit more variety to the listener.<br />Fast forwarding to today, special sound cards now enable computers to play 3-D audio, which is extensively used for games, as well as surround sound playback for actual DVDs. Some sound cards even enable computer users to record the sounds around them and create almost professional audio recordings!<br />Sounds cards’ most basic function is the translation of analog sound waves into digital computer data that may be manipulated in any number of ways. While this sounds fairly straight forward, it is imperative to remember that not all sound cards are created equal, and depending on the extensiveness of your need for this little device, there are some things to consider. Let us take a quick look at the top three things to consider when considering which sound card to use:<br />Consider the sound card’s bit-rate. No matter what use you will have for your sound card; the bit-rate will affect your enjoyment of the sound. Usually, these cards rate anywhere from eight to 16 bit; however, the most advanced technology now supports 24-bit sound quality. While the numbers appear close, this is the time to remember that the bit-rate is directly related to the clarity and “detail” you will be able to discern when listening to the sounds. Akin to the way resolution of a picture is measured in pixels (and the more pixels the higher the resolution, the crisper the picture), clarity of sound may be expressed via the bit-rate.<br />Consider the sound card’s connections. At the basic level, sound cards will permit for the connection of a microphone and of speakers. Yet those users, who need additional connectivity for recreational or even professional use, have caused the development of a whole host of additional input and output connections. For example, depending on the card, some now offer connections for multiple speakers to support 3-D and also surround sound. Other connections allow for the connection of synthesizers and other electronic instruments to the computers’ sound cards. First there is the signal to noise ratio (S2N) which may be measured in DB’s. The lower the signal to noise ratio, the lower the sound quality will be. Then onwards, the CPU is tagged with a particular clock frequency at which it can take up substantial workload on a regular basis without malfunctioning. As a quick refresher, we saw that computers are made up of many units of 0 and 1, the binary system. 1 is the highest digit possible so numbers in the computer are stored as for example 1010 or 10 in decimal. We also saw that these binary numbers can be seen as octal (8) or hexadecimal (16) numbers - in this case 1010 becomes 15 octal, or A hex.<br /><br />You probably realise that the 'standard' PC code is in 8 bit bytes taking the hex system a stage further. You may also know that processors, and Windows software that runs on them, have progressed from 8 bits to 16 bits to 32 bits to 64 bits. Basically this means the computer can work on 1,2, 4 or 8 bytes at once. Don't worry if this is all Gobbledegook, you don't need it to understand how computers add!<br /><br />OK now to the Math - cringe time! It's a little more complicated than last time, but if you think logically, like a computer, realising they are really dumb, you will sail through it!<br /><br />We take a break here to look at a bit of math you may not have heard of - Boolean Algebra. Once again it's really simple, but it shows you how a computer works, and why it is so pedantic!<br /><br />Boolean Algebra is named after George Boole, an English Mathematician in the 19th Century. He devised the logic system used in digital computers more than a century before there was a computer to use it!<br /><br />In Boolean Algebra, instead of + and - etc. we use AND and OR to form our logic steps.<br />For example:-<br /><br />x OR y = z means if x or y is present, we get z.<br />However,<br />x AND y = z means that both x and y need to be present to get z.<br />We can also consider an XOR (eXclusive OR).<br />x XOR y=z means that x or y BUT NOT BOTH must be present to get z.<br /><br />That's it! That's all the math you need to understand how a computer counts. Told you it was simple!<br /><br />How do we use this logic in the computer? We make up a little electronic circuit called a Gate with transistors and things, so we can work on our binary numbers stored in a register - just a bit of memory. (And that's the last electronics you'll hear about!). We make an AND gate, an OR gate, and an XOR gate<br /><br />When we add in decimal, for example 9+3 we get 2 'units' and carry one to the 10s, giving 10+2=12<br /><br />Remember the binary bit values in Decimal 1,2,4,8 etc? We start at 0 then 1 in the first bit position, the 1 bit. If we add 1 + 1 binary we have to end up with 10, which has a 1 bit in the second bit position, and a 0 in the first, giving Decimal 2+0=2. This second bit position is formed by a CARRY from the first bit.<br /><br />To make an adder we must duplicate with a logic circuit the way we add in binary. To add 1+1 we need 3 inputs, one for each bit, and a carry in, and 2 outputs, one for the result (1 or 0), and a carry out, (1 or 0). In this case the carry input is not used. We use 2 XOR gates, 2 AND gates and an OR gate to make up the adder for 1 bit.<br /><br />Now we go another step, and forget about gates, because now we have a Logic Block, an ADDER. Our computer is designed by using various combinations of logic blocks. As well as the adder we might have a multiplier (a series of adders) and other components.<br /><br />Our ADDER block takes one bit (0 or 1) from each number to be added, plus the Carry bit (0 or 1) and produces an output of 0 or 1, and a carry of 0 or 1. That is 010 plus 011 binary. We will need 3 ADDER blocks for decimal bit values of 1, 2 and 4)<br /><br />The first ADDER takes the Least Significant Bit (decimal bit value 1) from each number. Input A will be 0, input B will be 1 with no carry - 0.<br /><br />From the truth table this gives an output of 1 and a carry of 0 (3rd row). BIT 1 RESULT = 1<br /><br />At the same time the next ADDER (decimal bit value 2) has inputs of 1, 1 and a carry of 0, giving an output of 0 with a carry bit of 1 (4th row). BIT 2 RESULT = 0<br /><br />The next ADDER (decimal bit value 4) has inputs of 0, 0 and a carry of 1, giving an output of 1 with no carry - 0 (5th row). BIT 4 RESULT = 1.<br /><br />So we have bits 4,2,1 as 101 or 4+1=5.<br /><br />It seems like a laborious way to do it, but our computer can have 64 adders or more, adding simultaneously two large numbers billions of times a second. However, if this happens too often, then you know you have a problem at hand.<br />The first thing you need to make sure of is that all devices are installed properly, with up-to-date drivers. Open the system Properties Device manager , and check the yellow exclamatory marks. These signify improperly installed devices. Reinstall the drivers for that device, or just remove it and check if the system has stopped hanging.<br />Check your system for a virus. Make sure that your anti-virus definitions are up to date, and use the through scan option to scan your system regularly.<br />Certain badly written programs can be memory hogs, and refuse to release the memory they had used. This leads to more and more memory being used, until the system is unstable and crashes. Update your Os and with all the Latest patches.
